What does Nurture by Nature’s design studio do?
We are a Vermont-based interior and architectural design studio founded by Kate Swanson. We create layered, intentional spaces that balance efficiency with beauty - rooted in intuition, artistry, and precision. Every project is a dialogue between architecture and interior, handcraft and innovation, your vision and our process.
-
Do you only work in Vermont?
While our studio is rooted in Vermont, our work extends across the United States. Each project begins with listening to both client and context - whether that context is a mountain home in Colorado, a townhouse in New York, or a retreat on the California coast. Our process is adaptable and portable: we bring the same depth of care, artistry, and collaboration wherever a project calls us. Home is not bound by geography, and neither are we.
-
What is your design process like?
Our process is not linear, it is an unfolding. We move through five phases that build upon each other:
Learn – Listening deeply, distilling vision into words, imagery, and intention.
Envision – Mapping possibilities, exploring context, and shaping architectural solutions.
Design – Translating concept into detail - drawings, specifications, collaborations with makers.
Consensus – Aligning scope, budget, and timelines with transparency and clarity.
Realize – Orchestrating installation and curation, where your vision takes form.
The process is both structured and fluid, holding space for discovery, refinement, and joy.
-
Why is trust so important in design?
Design requires openness. It means allowing someone to interpret your vision, to hold your stories, and to translate them into form. Trust is what transforms the process into something creative rather than transactional. It allows you to step back, knowing each detail is being carried with intention, precision, and care. It is the quiet architecture behind every successful collaboration.
-
What does it mean to work with a creative?
It is an invitation to explore possibility. To question, to imagine, to discover. We are not simply shaping how a space looks—we are shaping how it feels, the rituals it holds, and the story it tells. Working with a creative is stepping into a partnership where the unseen becomes tangible, where intuition is given form.
-
Do you collaborate with artists and makers?
Yes - always. We believe makers are integral collaborators, not just craftspeople. Their voices are woven in early, allowing materiality and artistry to evolve alongside design. This results in spaces that are not only precise but soulful, infused with the rare and the personal.
-
What kinds of projects do you take on?
We work on residential and select commercial interiors, from renovations to new builds, from bespoke millwork to full architectural interiors. While scope varies, the throughline is our commitment to creating spaces that feel inevitable—balanced, alive, and deeply connected to both client and context.
-
Is there a minimum project size?
Yes. Every project requires time, attention, and resources to achieve its fullest expression. We work with a minimum project investment to ensure each collaboration receives the care and creativity it deserves. If you’re unsure whether your project qualifies, we welcome a conversation.
-
How do you keep projects on track?
We create a Project Map that acts as a compass—outlining scope, phases, budget, and timeline. You’ll have access to a client dashboard with real-time updates and transparent communication. This framework allows creativity to flow while ensuring structure and clarity throughout.
-
What happens after my project is complete?
Completion is not the end but a continuation. We provide ongoing support through flexible curation packages, gallery access, and curated selections. We also capture your project with photography and a keepsake book, a tangible memory of the journey we’ve shared. Your home will continue to evolve, and we’re here to evolve with it.

What is the Nurture by Nature Gallery?
The gallery is an extension of our design ethos—a place where the dialogue between designers and makers is celebrated. It is both a physical and conceptual space for collectible works, curated exhibitions, and objects that embody craftsmanship and poetry.
-
What makes the gallery unique?
Unlike a traditional showroom, our gallery is a living archive of ideas and collaborations. It highlights the rare, the personal, and the hand-touched. Each piece is chosen for its ability to carry meaning, invite curiosity, and spark connection.
-
Do you only show work by established artists?
No. Our gallery is guided by discovery. We celebrate both emerging and established voices, with a focus on process, materiality, and storytelling. Every maker we work with is chosen for the integrity of their vision and their commitment to craft.
-
Can I purchase work directly from the gallery?
Yes. Select pieces are available to acquire, whether as part of curated exhibitions or our ongoing collection. Each acquisition is handled with care, honoring the maker and ensuring the piece finds its rightful place in your space.
-
How does the gallery connect to your design studio?
The gallery is not separate from our design practice—it is in conversation with it. Many of the artists and makers featured in the gallery are collaborators in our studio projects. By engaging with the gallery, you are also stepping into the same ecosystem of craft, creativity, and connection that shapes our interiors.
-
Do you offer ongoing access to the gallery for clients?
Yes. Our design clients receive continued access to exclusive releases, and curated selections long after their project is complete. It is one of the ways we ensure your space continues to evolve, alive with beauty and possibility.
